We're happy to see students do well in competition, but it isn't our measure for promotion. Demonstrating proficiency of all the technical skills, and showing fortitude of character is the gauge our instructors use for promotion.

Like any athletic activity, there is a possibility of injury. However, safety is very important to us. Our instructors teach our techniques in a safe, logical progression, with emphasis on control and partner safety. Our classes can be physically demanding, but students can stop and rest when they need to, nor are they pushed to perform any techniques they feel uncomfortable with. We respect a student's judgment. We simply want our students to do as best as they can and to strive for excellence.

We believe that the primary function of the martial arts is the perfection of character. While our instructors will teach you how to fight, we believe that the best fight is the one that never happens. Our teachers take great responsibility in teaching the martial arts ethically, which helps students cultivate the virtues of self-control, discipline, compassion and humility.

In regards to our varied curriculum (jujitsu, MMA, karate, judo and gung fu), the Kodenkan Martial Arts Academy is a "modern" martial arts school. However, all of our instructors preserve the traditional philosophy and etiquette of their respective arts. We believe that the virtues of honor, humility and respect are universal elements for refining character, and like a traditional martial art school, we try to instill those virtues in our students. However, our classes are taught in a friendly, open atmosphere, which may be contrary to the approach of strict traditional martial art schools.
