Arnis class in Tucson

Arnis

Arnis is a Filipino martial art that teaches stick fighting, knife, empty hand, and grappling and also incorporates techniques from Karate, Kung fu, Aikido and Jujitsu.

Since 1998, Guro Merrell has had the privilege to train under Guro/Sifu Edgar Cordova of Tucson Pilipino Martial Arts Academy.  While mainly training in Arnis, Guro Cordova also included Muay Thai kickboxing and Jujitsu as a part of his regimen. Even more exciting, Guro Cordova also brought with him the availability to cross train with other Eskrimadors or like minded martial artists who were “in the loop”.

During his training under Guro Cordova, Guro Merrell was  given the opportunity to train with some the best instructors in the world.  Those who passed on their amazing skills included the late GM Remy Presas, GM Jeff Delaney, GM Ciriaco “Cacoy” Canete, GM Chris Petrilli, Master Sherril Johnson, and from Ft. Huachuca Master Chris Mitter.  Whether it was an all day event or a summer camp lasting several days, Guro Merrell trained consistently for over 10 years with his training partner Fred Wegner under the supervision of these and other instructors.

For his persistence and dedication, Guro Merrell has earned black belts in Modern Arnis, Muay Thai, and Guro Edgar Cordova’s own system. In addition, Guro Cordova verbally placed Guro Merrell between 3rd and 4th degree level in Arnis overall.  Guro Merrell will continue to spread the art of Arnis in order to help individuals achieve the same sense of appreciation for all martial arts.
